BREAKING ARTISTS

NICK SALZMAN

Picture
This "Boro-Built" local is proud to setup shop in the town that made the imprint on who he is today. Getting tattooed at a young age opened up his eyes to tattooing as an art form. He made the common mistake of buying a kit and chopping up some friends, before eventually going to school to learn how to do it the right way. With over 18 years of experience and building an impressive following, he leads Breaking Ink with his intense work ethic and undeniable charisma. "I love being able to connect with a client and document a moment in their life with a tattoo; as well as help people feel more comfortable in their skin."  His favorite style to tattoo is anything with complex patterns, although constantly developing his versatile skill resume. He is one of a few in the state that specialize in Polynesian Tribal and thoroughly enjoys Mandalas, Sacred Geometry, Paisley, Dotwork, Celtic and Soft Black & Grey. His advice to someone contemplating their first tattoo: "Put some meaning behind it and dare to be different. Research and find an artist that can do the style you're looking for. " When Nick is not tattooing, you can find him coaching football and wrestling, gardening, spending time with family, and studying apometric arts. His motto on life: "Treat others how you want to be treated." Fun fact: Nick has been on tv for breakdancing, another passion connected to the meaning of the shop name.

MATT OSTELLA

Picture
Originally from Washington, Matt grew up in Southern Cali and Oregon surrounded by people with tattoos. He picked up the trade and would often exchange tattoos for tattoos. When he found out he was going to be a father, he decided to pursue his artwork as a career and go to school. He has over 8 years of experience and demonstrates an exceptional awareness and dedication to the craft. He has developed a notable repertoire for his script and custom lettering. His clean lines and color work are evidenced in his multi-faceted style, with an influence of his favorite Black & Grey designs.  When he’s not tattooing, he enjoys fishing, playing with his dog, spending time with family, and showing his daughters all the joys that he never had the opportunity to experience as a kid. He lives his life by this: “I don’t want to be a product of my environment. I want my environment to be a product of me.”

BRIAN LONG

Picture
From the moment he could hold a crayon, Brian always had a passion for drawing daily. He became hooked to tattooing, as a young teen growing up in Forest Grove, and has been slinging ink for over 25 years. He loves to tattoo anything with realism, with his exceptional drawing skills apparent in his portrait work. This down to earth artist can concoct incredible detail in an impressive amount of time. He won Best Black & Grey Sleeve at the 2018 Portland Tattoo Expo! His advice to someone getting their first tattoo: “Make sure you really think about what you want. Research artists and make sure who you choose can do what you want in the same style you’re looking for. Otherwise, get a good bite to eat before your appointment. The better you relax, the faster it’ll get done.” When he’s not tattooing or sketching, he enjoys hanging out with his dog, driving to the beach or river, camping, barbecuing, and watching movies.

CASSIDY FINK

Although only tattooing for a couple of years, Cassidy brings an impressive consistency of work ethic and youthful perception that enhances her ability to connect with clients and create their everlasting aesthetic. Her love for drawing and making pretty designs lead her to pursue tattooing as a way to give people art they will love forever. She loves tattooing nature inspired motifs, realistic black and grey styles, and anything that flows beautifully with the body’s natural shape. Her advice to someone getting their first tattoo: “It won’t hurt as much as you think it will!” When she’s not tattooing, this locally raised Hillsboro artist enjoys reading, painting, doing photography and spending time with friends. BROOKE HUGHES

Picture
Albeit new to the tattoo profession, Brooke brings an experienced repertoire of artistry. Hailing from Orange County, she studied drawing and painting at California State University Long Beach and utilizes those skills in her remarkable tattoo details. When she eventually decided to fulfill her lifelong dream of being a tattoo artist, she never looked back. “I love what I do.” Her favorite styles are fine line realism, botanical designs, script, and ornamental patternwork. Insects are extra fun for her too. She reassures those getting their first tattoo that it’s not going to hurt as much as they think. “I’ve been told I’m very light-handed and fine line is pretty forgiving pain-wise.” When Brooke is not tattooing, she enjoys reading and crocheting by the fire as well as traveling on occasion. Around Halloween and Christmas time, you can find her at craft shows selling her crochet and crystal creations. She lives by the adage: “Do no harm but take no crap!”
